Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is the only FDA-approved treatment to temporarily reduce the appearance of both moderate and severe frown lines, crow's feet and forehead lines. Made from the neurotoxin botulinum toxin, Botox works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles in which it’s injected. Once injected, the muscle can’t contract and crease the skin on top of it. This softens existing wrinkles and prevents new lines from forming.

Which areas can Botox treat?

Dr. Henry can use Botox around your face and body to treat a variety of skin and muscle concerns, including:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Frown lines
  • Neck creases
  • Nasolabial folds (around the nose)
  • Chin dents
  • Downward lip corners
  • Glabella lines (between the eyebrows)
  • Lip lines
  • Excessive sweating
  • Migraines

What makes Botox unique is its ability to soften wrinkles and deep creases gradually, so the results look smooth and natural.

What happens during Botox?

Before you come in for your Botox appointment, Dr. Henry schedules you for an initial consultation. During this visit, you and Dr. Henry can discuss the areas you want to treat and the results you’re hoping to achieve.

At your second visit, Dr. Henry prepares your skin with a local or topical anesthetic, such as lidocaine, to reduce pain and discomfort during your treatment. She then injects the Botox directly into your muscle to stop it from contracting.

What happens after Botox?

You shouldn’t rub the treatment area for at least 24 hours after the procedure to ensure it has time to settle into your muscle without spreading to a different area. However, you can return to your normal activities after treatment.

Many people notice visible results within a day of their first treatment. However, most see their most dramatic results after 1-2 weeks. The effects gradually wear off after about 3-6 months.

Botox is safe and effective at treating wrinkles and other skin ailments, such as excessive sweating. You can maintain your results by returning to Skin & Aesthetic Surgery of Manhattan for routine treatments. Call the office or schedule an appointment online to find out if Botox is right for you.
